Fundamentals of Great T-shirt Design

There's a lot more for a t-shirt than just the design

All those that can't draw or design well can breathe a sigh of relief.

Here are the 7 fundamentals of a GOOD t-shirt design.

1.It sells.
Something must be good if the design is selling. I have seen crappy designs sell a lot and beautiful designs hardly sell at all. Let have some encouragement that you don’t need become best designer to make t-shirts people want to buy. Please reinforce that last bit, if you want to earn a living as a t-shirt designer, you have to make t-shirts people willing to buy.

2.It's cost effective.
If shirts cost you $15-20/each to make, it's hard to be profitable. Your goal is to try get the best bang for your buck. The more shirts you print at a time, the cheaper they will be. Use mid-range quality t-shirt brands but you will notice a difference in shirt quality. Alternatively, you can use the money you save here into your packaging which goes a long way in the customer experience.

3.The idea or concept is meaningful.
Many customers will buy a shirt based on the idea or brand-name alone and not the design. Your shirt is a way for your fans to communicate a message or their affiliation with a brand they believe in. You can get away with a mediocre design if the idea or concept resonates with your audience.

4.You would wear it yourself.
This is simple. "Good" t-shirt design is subjective and your taste is different than everyone else. Just putting yourself in the buyer's shoes is always a good idea.

“Would you wear it?”
“Does the design inspire you or get you excited?”

If not, something is probably off.

5.It pushes the envelope.
This one is often dependent on your concept and design, but there are many bells and whistles you can try out that other indie t-shirt brands probably aren't doing. Like embroidery, applique, foil prints, dye sublimation all-over prints, discharge or water-based printing techniques. These will increase your costs, but sometimes these "upgrades" can make your product stand out.

6.It's popular.
One good way to test the waters is to get feedback on social media or forum. You might see what your audience thinks. I often test out different designs and get a reaction from my fans before I go to print. If people are liking and sharing the design more than others, you've got a winner.

7.It pleases the audience.
This is really what it's all about. You must know your fans and what they like. It's a good idea to stay engaged on social media and to keep them involved in your brand. If your audience likes it - despite an average design or mediocre concept, that tells you something. You'll be surprised what designs become audience favorites and it's not always the design you spent the most money or time on. Keep tabs on what designs your audience likes and let that inform your new designs.

Remember to always follow your own inspiration and make shirts that excite you and light you up. Then involve your customers and learn from their feedback and behaviours.

They rely on you to be an innovator and thought leader. That's why they follow you!
